Dalyan is the main breeding ground for the world famous “logger head turtles.”
The beautiful strand of golden brown sand called Iztuzu Beach or better known as Turtle Beach is the famous breeding ground for loggerhead turtles. These giants of the sea lumber ashore on summer nights to lay their eggs in the sand.
Turtle beach hit the headlines in 1987 when the foundations for a luxury hotel were laid at the south end of the beach. There was a storm of protest from conservationists throughout the world (including Briton David Bellamy), backed by public opinion, the Turkish government scrapped the project and declared the beach a protected area for ever more.
Dalyan has many therapeutic hot springs. The waters which contain radioactive elements and sulphur are believed to cure rheumatism, skin, liver, spleen and bowel complaints, as well as being beneficial for nervous, digestive disorders and gynaecological problems.
Once you have covered yourself in the mud, you wait for a few minutes for it to dry and then you clean yourself in the sulphur pool. While many people do not believe in any scientific logic or health benefits of the mud, it is really great fun for tourists playing in the mud, rubbing it on their bodies and taking lots of pictures of this unique memory.
